Upgrades and Issues

On this trip we are enjoying, immensely, three upgrades to the RV. First, I bought a nice mattress. It's from the same place we bought the bed for our house, Original Mattress Factory, and we have loved it for at least 10 years. I got the same firmness minus the comfort topper because we have a topper we could put on it.

The RV mattress is labeled an "RV queen." It's exactly 1" shorter than a full-size mattress in the rest of the world, which is bullshit. First, where do they get off calling it any kind of a "queen"? Second, just make it a standard size so no one has to pay extra to get something custom-made. I just ordered the full and Scott squeezed it in there (there is a closet at the foot of the bed that is rigid. The mattress had enough give that Scott didn't have to move the wall over). It is SO COMFORTABLE and it has increased our joy to no end to sleep in it.

Second, I got new foam for the dinette cushions. It's high-density foam that I cut down to size (and the shape). I stuffed the foam into the vinyl cushion covers pretty good, so no telling how long the material will last before giving out, but they are exceedingly comfortable.

Finally, on the drive out we were sleeping under the two quilts I made and a blanket. The quilts are a bit heavy and inflexible, and they aren't wide enough to cover both of us without letting some cold air in on someone. At some point I said I just wish we had my cloud (down comforter) and Scott agreed 100%. So when we got to Phoenix, we hit up a Kohl's where we found a down comforter on the shelf to my surprise. We LOVE it.

Oh we also copied our Richard Graves watercolor. We shrank it down, framed it, and hung it in the camper where you can see it when you first walk in.

We have also had a few equipment issues on this trip.
  • The furnace is not working.
  • The carbon monoxide detector was going nuts so Scott disconnected it. It turns out they have a lifespan, and ours had exceeded it.
  • Finally, our propane splitter is not working.

Some RV Upgrades

Quilts. His and her quilts. Mine is on top of the bed.

A picture of his before it was quilted (on our bedroom bed but here just for display).

Reading Lights. Scott moved the lights from where they were originally: under the cabinets. Had we left them there, I would have had a reading light, and my foot would have had a reading light. Scott would have had nothing.

They were there because that's where they make sense on a 19' Vintage Cruiser; they make zero sense in our 17'. In the 19', the bed is turned so that the head is under the cabinets, and the lights are over the sleepers' heads. It's just SO LAZY and LOWDOWN that Gulf Stream didn't put the lights under the head of the 17'. Geez, how hard would it be?

Scott's fix is one of the most needed and satisfying of all his fixes. The shelf he added is super useful, too (later he added another above this one. We use them both.)

Other Improvements. Shelves, hooks, curtains, backsplash, and a rug contoured to the front "hallway."
TV mounting, hooks, shelves, mirror.
doors in under-chair and under-bed storage. Huge improvement.
extending bed to accommodate Scott's 6'4" frame.
flag, signal-booster antenna, and Reussers sign (made by our daughter).
New window in the door. Original unfrosted; this one clear with an adjustable shade.
White walls. Original tires had the advantage of being actual whitewalls (for the vintage look) but the disadvantage of being cheap crap, and one blew out on our way home from Salt Fork, maybe third trip out or so. Scott replaced the tires with quality tires, but they aren't whitewalls, so he paints them.

More Improvements

Stove top cover. Saw this on a FB vintage cruiser group and Scott recreated within the week. Here's the original stainless top, the stove with the top removed, and Scott's improved cutting board top. Sweet.
